Assignment 3
Creating an Action Project Plan
Overview
The purpose of this assignment is to take the Self-Assessment and Analysis results and create a plan outlining an action project for increasing knowledge and abilities in your added Single Subject (SS) content area authorization.  Your project’s results will reflect your increased understandings needed to become an effective teacher in your added SS content area authorization.  To achieve your action project’s results, you will create an action plan outlining your project’s learning goals, learning activities, learning product(s), deepening experience, and timeline.  The action project’s plan will focus on increasing your knowledge and abilities associated with the Teaching Framework’s 5-Elements:
1.     Content Area Knowledge  (CA-Academic Standards)
2.     Pedagogy (curriculum, instruction, assessment)
3.     Diverse Learners (knowledge acquisition challenges)
4.     Technology-Based Instruction (current and future)
5.     Resources (Teaching and Professional Growth)

Your action project’s plan will be composed of 6 areas: Rationale, Learning Goals, Proposed Learning Product, Proposed Learning Activities, Proposed Deepening Experience, and Timeline. Each area is described below along with indicators of success for that particular area.
 I. Rationale
What Knowledge and Abilities Do I Need to Learn to Become an Effective Teacher in my Added Single Subject (SS) Content Area Authorization?

Based on the Conclusions you described in Assignment 2 (Self-Assessment and Analysis), summarize your reasons for creating a project based on the Teaching Framework’s Five Elements. Your rationale should reflect the following 4 Indicators of Success:
1.     Align to the conclusions found in your self-assessment analysis
2.     Explain why you want to create and implement your action project
3.     Relates to each of the Teaching Framework’s 5-Elements
4.     Explains why your learning is important to you as a teacher
Rationale
Describe your rationale for your project in the box below.  Your rationale is required to meet the 4 Indicators of Success stated above.

Based on my conclusions describe in Assignment 2, I am creating a project based on the Teaching Framework’s Five Elements because I need to learn more about the English Language Arts curriculum, the best research-based strategies to use in the classroom, and real lesson plans I can use in my future English classroom.

It is important that I create and implement my action plan in order to become an effective English teacher. By having a greater amount of knowledge about the English Language Arts curriculum, research-based strategies, and lesson plans, I will have a large resource treasure chest to better prepare me for the actual classroom.

By creating and implementing my action plan I will have a greater understanding of the content area knowledge by studying the English Language Arts CCSS. I will have a greater understanding of the pedagogy by researching the curriculum, instructional strategies, and assessment strategies. I will be better equipped the meet the diverse learning needs of my students. I will research technology-based instruction to use in the English classroom. I will learn about upcoming professional development workshops in order to learn from others.

Students come to school to learn, and in order for them to learn I need to be prepared. That is why the implementation of my action plan is so important to me as a teacher. It is vital that I research and study what it means to be an effective and successful English teacher so that I can maximize learning for my students.

II. Learning Goals
What Knowledge and Abilities Do I Need to Learn to Become an Effective Teacher in my Added Single Subject (SS) Content Area Authorization?

Based on your Conclusions you described in Assignment 2 (Self-Assessment and Analysis), Teaching Framework’s Five Elements, and Rationale, you will create one or more goals related to all of Indicators of Success:
(Indicators of Success)
1.     Relate to your rationale.
2.     Increase your understandings in each of the Teaching Framework’s 5-Elements
3.     Lead to or indicate your proposed learning activities.
4.     Indicate how learning goals will measure achievement.
5.     Describe you final project’s product.

Learning Goals
Describe your project’s Learning Goals in the box below.  Your goals are required to meet the 5 Indicators of Success stated above.

Based on my conclusions described in Assignment 2, and my rationale, my goal for this project is to develop a complete unit of study within the English Language Arts content area. By developing a complete unit of study I will further analyze the ELA CCSS, sample curriculum, instructional strategies, assessment strategies, differentiated instruction, technology-based instruction, and professional resources.

To accomplish this complete unit of study, I will learn from veteran English teachers by watching sample lesson plan videos, researching their lesson plans, seeing how they organize their English classrooms, what CCSS they focus on during a unit of study, and see what instructional strategies they’ve found most effective.

I will meet my learning goal by creating a complete unit of study, which will indicate my success and achievement. The final project will focus on a particular book or novel, and will include daily learning plans. The final project will include student learning goals, objectives, CCSS, and expected outcomes. The final project will include how each day, week, and overall unit of study is organized.

III. Proposed Learning Product
What Project and Final Project (learning product) Do I Need to Create to Become an Effective Teacher in my Added Single Subject (SS) Content Area Authorization?

Based your Rationale and Learning Goals, describe your proposed Learning Product. Your product represents achievement of your Learning Goals and Activities.  Here are a few Learning Product examples for your consideration:
·       Curriculum (unit plan, year plan)
·       Design an original video game
·       Case Study (describing the day in the life of an effective teacher improving the learning of all diverse learners in her/his classroom)
·       Resource File for each area of the 5-Elements of the Teaching Framework
·       Propose another learning product
In describing your Learning Product, discuss how you will combine the Teaching Framework’s 5-Elements (content area knowledge, pedagogy, diverse learners, technology-based instruction, and resources) to increase your knowledge and abilities in your added SS content area authorization.
Learning Product (6 indicators of success)
1.     Reflect clear and detailed descriptions.
2.     Shows a clear alignment to the rationale.
3.     Align to the learning goals.
4.     Represent meaningful, relevant, significant, and increased understanding of the teaching frameworks five elements.
5.     Shows direct evidence of increased understanding in the teaching framework’s five elements.
6.     Achieves each of the learning goals at high levels of excellence.
7.     Provides criteria or indictors of a successful Learning Product

The Learning Product
Describe your intended Learning Product in the box below.

My intended learning product will be a complete unit plan. The purpose of creating such a learning product is to become more confident in the English Language Arts content area. Based on my self-assessment and analysis in Assignment 2, I need to learn more about the English curriculum, the best research-based strategies, and professional development. By creating a unit of study, I will be increasing my knowledge in all of those necessary areas.

The unit of study will include the applicable CCSS, which will help me to further understand those standards. It will include real lesson plans I can use in the classroom, which will further my understanding of the English pedagogy, such as curriculum, instruction, and assessment. My unit plan will include differentiated instruction in order to meet the diverse needs of my students. It will include learning plans that incorporate technology to increase student understanding and engagement. I will also make tremendous progress in my professional development by learning from experienced English teachers.

This unit of study must be an actual learning plan that I can use in a real classroom, with all of the necessary components.

IV. Learning Activities

How Will I Learn About the Identified Knowledge and Abilities?

Based on your described project, create (you determine the exact number) learning activities related to the Indicators of Success (below).  You will want to use combinations of activities.  Here are examples of learning activities:
·       Conduct a review of the educational literature
·       Review videos found at NU library, You Tube, Teacher Tube, etc.
·       Interview and/or survey experts (recognized teachers, district personnel, county, state) in your added content area authorization
·       Internet (sites, blogs, podcasts, videos)
·       Document analysis (national, state, county, district curriculum guides) (textbook)
·       Observe (experts)

Learning Activities (4 indicators of success)
1.     Provide clear and detailed descriptions of the people, resources, materials, and steps required to accomplish the learning goals
2.     Provide clear descriptions about how they will lead increased learning in each of the Teaching Framework’s 5-Elements
3.     Provide clear and detailed descriptions of the product(s) produced as a result of completing the activities.

Learning Activities
In the box below, describe how you will go about learning the knowledge and abilities needed to complete your project.

To learn the knowledge and abilities needed to complete my project, I will need to employ a variety of learning activities. I will search for sample lesson plan videos through websites such as the Teaching Channel, which often focuses on lesson plans that incorporate the CCSS.

I will interview recognized teachers in the English content area, learn how they organize their unit plans, what books they study during the school year, and what strategies they find most effective. This will help increase my pedagogical knowledge of the English curriculum.

I will conduct an internet search to find sample lesson plans, read English teachers’ blogs, and/or watch videos on sites such as YouTube. This will help me to research the best instructional strategies, assessment strategies, technology-based instruction, and differentiated instruction. I will also search for upcoming professional development workshops for English teachers.

I will search for district curriculum guides to gain a better understanding of the expectations of the district, as well as how a school year can be organized for an English classroom.

As a result of completing these learning activities, I will be able to develop and create a complete unit of study in order to become a more confident and effective English teacher.

V. Deepening Experience

How Will I Deepen My Learning To Further Increase My Knowledge and Abilities?

To further increase your knowledge and abilities, you will create and implement a ‘deepening’ experience to push your learning. This experience should be an extension of your Learning Activities and Product.  For example, a ‘deepening’ experience could be:
·       Have two experts review your completed project (learning product). The review would be structured around a series feedback questions you created for the experts.
·       Interview and/or survey teachers in your SS added content area. You will create a series of questions investigating particular elements from the Teaching Framework.
·       Teach a daily learning plan (lesson plan) in your added SS content area and write a reflection describing your experience in relationship to the Teaching Framework’s Five Elements.
·       Recommend your own ‘deepening’ experience, built around one or more of the five elements..
Deepening Experience (4 indicators of success)
1.     Identifies clear and detailed descriptions of the experience’s context (who, what, when, how).
2.     Provides clear and detailed descriptions about how the experience deepens your understanding achieved during your Learning Activities.
3.     Explains how your Learning Product will be changed and enriched as a result of the experience.
4.     Provides detailed information describing how your understanding will be increased in the Teaching Framework’s Five Elements.
5.     Provides criteria or indictors of a successful deepening experience and Learning Product.

Deepening Experience
In the box below, provide a detailed description of your ‘deepening’ experience.
To deepen my learning experience, I will have two expert English teachers review my completed unit of study. The two English teachers I will ask are Callie Tuck, who teaches English at my current school; and Renee Sowers, who teaches at Oak Crest Middle School, and has been awarded “Teacher of the Year.” I will provide several questions for them to answer after reviewing my unit plan. These questions will focus on what they think works well, what should be changed, what should be added, and anything else they can offer to make it better.

By gaining feedback from experienced English teachers, I will gain greater insight into the mind of a veteran teacher who has spent considerable time in the classroom. I will be able to benefit from these teachers’ knowledge and experience in order to avoid possible pitfalls in the actual classroom with students.

After the two expert teachers review my work, I will make changes and adjustments according to their feedback. This will make my unit of study much more effective and maximize learning for my students. The expert teachers will be able to offer greater insight into the ELA CCSS, the English curriculum, instructional strategies, assessment strategies, differentiated instruction, and technology-based instruction. I will be able to learn from their past mistakes and successes, therefore increasing my professional development.

I will know this deeper learning experience is successful by using the feedback of the expert teachers to make necessary changes and adjustments to my learning plan. I will be able to compare the new learning plan to the old learning to plan to see how one is more effective than the other.

 VI. Project’s Timeline

How Will I Organize My Learning In Order To Increase My Knowledge and Abilities?

Good planning is an essential characteristic of a successful project.  Therefore, you will create a timeline based on 2 major items: Learning Activities and Deepening Experience. Create your timeline around the Indicators of Success
Timeline (2 indicators of success)
1.     Provides a realistic timeline for achieving each Learning Activity.
2.     Provides a timeline for achieving the Deepening Experience.
Timeline
In the box below, provide a detailed description of your timeline.
